（Vol.36） Melting Pot

Every time I visit the Immigration Bureau in Shinagawa I am amazed at the number of non-Japanese that live in and around the Tokyo area. I say this because I have lived in very rural areas of Japan (in Gifu) where I and my roommate seemed to be the only non-Japanese living in the area; where we would often be stared at and or approached by strangers who wanted to ‘practice’ their English skills.
Now after having lived in such a large city/capital region as Tokyo I have gotten used to seeing and associating with other non-Japanese residents of Japan. I was at the Immigration Bureau again recently for certain immigration reasons and felt like I was in a waiting room of some sort at home (in Canada). Sitting next to me was an Italian woman next to her was an elderly Japanese-American lady. Others of Asian ethnicity, and others of European descent sitting in and around me. In this extremely multicultural situation I watched the Japanese employees working behind the counter. I figured that they were processing approximately 100 people’s applications an hour. I really felt and high degree of respect for there efforts as I know that were I actually in Canada the number of applications accepted in an hour would not have been so many, probably less than half.
I am sure that there were at least 850 people (in total) at the Immigration Bureau the day I was there to submit various applications and documents. It was indeed refreshing to be in such a multicultural setting. I am content to live in Japan where the majority of residents are Japanese (99%), yet having come from such a melting pot, my periodic visits to the Immigration Bureau in Shinagawa give me a burst of what home is like. It is very refreshing.

人種のるつぼ
品川にある入国管理局に行くたびに、首都圏で暮らしてる外国の方の多さに驚きます。以前、私は岐阜の片田舎に住んでいて、そのエリアでは日本人ではないのは、私とルームメイトだけというような状況だったからです。そこでは私たちは珍しがられ、じろじろ見られたり、英語を練習したい知らない人から呼び止められたりしていました。
今、大都会東京のような首都に住んで、日本にいる外国の方を見たり仲間になったりする環境に慣れてきました。入国管理局の待合室にいると、ふと、カナダに戻ったような気になります。隣にはイタリア人の女性が座り、その横には日系アメリカ人のおばあさん、周りにはアジア系やヨーロッパ系の人々が座っています。
この多文化環境の中で、カウンターで働いている日本人の公務員が目にとまりました。彼らは、1時間におよそ100人の申請書を審査していました。私はその多さに感心し、尊敬してしまいました。実際カナダだったら、1時間でそれほどの審査はできないでしょう。多分、半分にも満たないと思います。
私が色々な申請書や書類を提出した日、入国管理局には少なくとも850人は申請に来ていたでしょう。このような多文化環境に身をおくと、私は本当にリフレッシュできます。私は、大多数が日本人という日本での生活に満足していますが、「人種のるつぼ」カナダ出身の私は、入国管理局の雰囲気でカナダを思い出す事が出来るのです。それは本当にすがすがしい気分です。
